PBL: My Emotions! Day 3

Welcome to another instalment of our newest PBL unit, ‘My Emotions’! Our children are in the process of recognizing the different emotions that they see around them. In this class, they will explore their emotions using the expressive power of colour!
PLANNING AND SETUP
The activity was divided into the following steps:
1. Finding My Feeling Colour: Rectangular strips of white paper were cut and kept ready for use. Trays were prepared with jumbo brushes, palettes, and tempera paint. Aprons were made available for painting time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Finding My Feeling Colour: The children assembled at the tables with their educators. Each child was asked to describe how they were feeling that day. Their answers were spread over the entire spectrum of emotions; for example, Arya said she was excited, while Yuvaan (Bhopalka) said he was angry. The Arthlings were then shown flashcards of different colours. They were asked to choose a colour to represent how they felt, and to paint it using tempera paint!
The children used their knowledge of colours to mix their preferred shade. When pink paint was not available for Arya to paint her ‘excited’ colour, she suggested that red and white could be mixed to create pink. Some children chose primary colours: Yuvaan (Bhopalka) chose red for his ‘angry’ colour, while Adrived chose yellow to express ‘happiness’! The children also did not confine themselves to only one colour — Shivanyaa initially chose pink and purple, but also made orange to illustrate her ‘happy’ colour!

OUTCOME AND FUTURE
Art is a powerful expressive tool for humans of all ages. Forming an association with different colours helps children explore feelings that are hard to verbalize or communicate. The link between colour and emotions will be investigated in greater depth later on in this series!
