Welcome to the tastiest episode of this series, the Grand Finale of Culture Week! The Arthlings have travelled back to their roots, and have now arrived at a delicious final destination!
For Day 10, the facilitators invited the children to have a potluck party. Each child was invited to bring a dish from their cultural background to share with the class!
PLANNING AND SETUP
The activity was divided into the following steps:
1. Tasting Our Cultural Dishes: Plates, bowls, spoons, aprons, and a picnic tablecloth were kept ready for use during the party.
2. Drawing My Dish: Worksheets were prepared for the children to document their experience. Pencils and crayons were provided in trays.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1. Tasting Our Cultural Dishes: Priyanka Didi inaugurated the potluck party by inviting the Arthlings to sit in a circle. Each Arthling opened their container of food and introduced it to the class!
Sweet dishes reigned supreme on the menu. Rishit, Hazzel, and Shivanyaa brought Churma, made with flour, sugar and ghee. Ayansh brought Atta-Badam Ka Halwa, prepared with flour and almonds. Maryam brought Sheer Khurma, which had milk, vermicelli, and dates! Among the savoury options were Shivansh’s Papad, Meher’s Aloo Tikki, Vaanya’s Gathiya and Dhriya’s Kachori Sabzi!
After the introductions, the Arthlings got into their aprons and collected their plates, bowls, and spoons. The facilitators helped each child to assemble a small tasting platter with samples of different dishes! Finally, the children were ready to dig in!
2. Drawing My Dish: When the Arthlings were done with their plates, they washed their hands and sat down to record their experience on paper! Each child created an illlustration of their dish. Shivansh made a large round shape and a small round shape, to represent his papads. Dhriya drew several circles to make kachoris, and coloured them in yellow and brown! Vaanya drew several tall, angular shapes to represent gathiya. The children also did not let the actual colour of the foods deter them from using their imaginations! Maryam used bright pink to illustrate her dish, while Meher used light green on her Aloo Tikki.

OUTCOME AND FUTURE
This potluck party gave the Arthlings a chance to taste a wide array of traditional delicacies! While each child was able to proudly showcase their own culture, they were also exposed to food from other cultures.
The ritual of eating together allowed the Arthlings to build their socio-emotional skills. They prepared for the meal by putting on aprons, collecting utensils, and waiting in line. They all ate without assistance! The feast was also an opportunity for the children to bond over food.
The aim of this project was for each Arthling to uncover their story, to publish their very own book! While this instalment marks the end of their inward exploration, the Arthlings’ work is far from over! Join us for our next episode, where the Arthlings will become book designers, editors, and publishers!
