Pedagogy Of Head, Heart, and Hands

Head, Heart and Hand

At arth, we believe that learning should be holistic, aimed at nurturing the wholesomeness that lies within all children. Therefore the goal of any education must be nurturing a child’s entire being - their Head (Cognition), Heart (Emotion), and Hands (Skills).

The development of the Head is about the development of our brain architecture, more specifically, cognition, which includes the following faculties:

  • Perception

  • Focus & Attention

  • Language

  • Memory

  • Logic & Reasoning

  • Critical Thinking

  • Problem Solving

  • Decision Making

  • Creativity

The development of the Heart is the development of our emotional and social self. It is about developing the following attributes:

  • Self-confidence and Awareness

  • Making relationships

  • Managing feelings and behaviour

  • Empathy and Kindness

  • Mindsets

  • Habits of the Mind

  • Resilience

The development of the Hand is about us learning how to gain control of our bodies and the development of skills. These would include:

  • Gross Motor Development
(This involves the journey from sitting up to crawling, walking and then more complex, athletic movements)

  • Fine Motor Development

    • Finger Movement

    • Finger Strength

    • Hand-Eye Co-ordination

In essence, early childhood is about developing the different faculties we’ve been born with. Early experiences affect the development of brain architecture, which provides the foundation for all future learning, behaviour, and health. Cognitive, emotional, and social capacities are inextricably intertwined throughout the life course. The brain is a highly integrated organ, and its multiple functions operate in coordination with one another. Emotional well-being and social competence provide a strong foundation for emerging cognitive abilities, and together they are the bricks and mortar of brain architecture. The emotional and physical health, social skills, and cognitive-linguistic capacities that emerge in the early years are all important for success in school, the workplace, and the larger community.
