Props Used

Different shaped wooden blocks (rectangle, square and triangle)

What was the activity?

The activity involved presenting the kids with different shaped and sized wooden blocks and they were invited to play with them in their own capacities.

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Physical Development: This play helped in developing spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination while deciding where to put which sized block. Also, they learnt how to balance and stabilize themselves while holding the bigger blocks.

  • Creativity & Imagination: The toddlers were encouraged to build any structure of their choice. This gave them a space to be free and creative in the space.

  • Mathematical and Problem solving skill: High quality play was motivated where they solved the problems with their own creative thoughts. E.g. They drove their car toys over the Roads constructed with rectangular blocks.

  • Cooperative play: The kids were encouraged to cooperatively play with other peers. Eg. They were invited to share their blocks with friends.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Wooden blocks were kept on the floor between the light table area and the play area. Facilitator sat and started engaging with the blocks while subtly inviting whosoever wishes to come and play.

How did it go? (Finally!)

They children seemed quite interested in holding differently shaped blocks, including the rectangular, square and triangular blocks. Neyansh, Taksh, Ayaansh, Jasvi, Janya, and Atharv Goyal. During the activity, Neyansh went to pick up his favorite car toys. Taking this cue, the facilitator built a road using rectangular blocks and asked if Neyansh wants to ride his cars on wooden roads, to which he responded positively. Subsequently, houses of Taksh and Neyansh were built along the roads and they took the cars from one side to the other on the same roads. The toddlers kept fluctuating from the area where blocks were kept to the white board aisle. Atharv Goyal seemed happy when he used to break the wooden houses by waiving off his hands over them. Ratujit came to the area and helped the facilitator in cleaning up by putting the blocks from the floor to the racks.
