Cut-outs of Different fruits and vegetables (both big and small in size) and fevistick.

What was the activity?

The activity involved color and shape matching. Small cutouts were supposed to be stuck over the bigger cutouts (pasted on the table) using fevisticks.

Why did we plan this activity?

This activity is cognitively a vibrant one and its benefits include,

  • Sensory Experience: the act of rolling the fevistick, which the kids often touched while pasting the smaller cutouts, involved a sensory experience of stickiness.

  • Color and shape recognition: The arthlings were recognising and matching different colors and shapes to stick the fruits and veggies cutouts. For example, tomatoes were red in color and oval in shape.

  • Healthy lifestyle: The kids were introduced to healthy food choices like fruits and vegetables.

  • Fine and Gross motor skills: Rolling the fevistick over the sheet and sticking the smaller cutouts over the bigger ones (displayed over different corners of the table) strengthened their finger muscles for holding things and pincer’s grasp.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Colored sheets were used to cut out the template of three fruits (banana, apple and guava) and three vegetables (Brinjal, broccoli and tomato). Similarly, small cutouts of the same fruits and vegetables were gathered and put out on different plates. The bigger cutouts were pasted on the tables over three different corners. The kids were invited from the play area by showing them cutouts of different fruits and vegetables. They were introduced with each fruit and vegetable and asked to ‘roll/rub’ the fevistick and ‘dab’ the smaller cutout over the bigger ones.

How did it go? (Finally!)

One table was assigned for the fruits cutouts and another one for the vegetables cutouts. Swastik, Aaradhya, Radhya, Aayansh, Krishay, Janya and Jasvi participated over the fruit table (with Simran J). When the educator asked to recognise the fruits, Krishay, Jasvi and Janya were able to do so. Shivansh, Prisha, Daksh, Kiara, Ratujit, Radhya, and Advaith came to the vegetable table (with jasmine) for sticking. The educator also passed on blank sheets to the kids when the bigger cutouts got filled and the kids still wanted to carry on with the sticking activity. It seemed that recognising veggies was not that easy for the kids.
