Pull the cups out (As much as you can!)

Date: June 28, 2022
Time: Work Time
Facilitators: Jasmine & Simran J

PROPS USED

Paper cups, Glue, Brown paper, and tempera paints.

What was the activity?

In this activity the arthlings are supposed to pull the cups out (glued upside down on the brown paper beforehand).

Improvisation: The activity was improvised since the kids weren’t able to pull the cups with the strength they have, so they were invited to first squeeze the cups, make the cups smaller in size and then pull out the cups!

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Fine and gross motor skills: Grabbing the cups and pulling them out involves a lot of strength, especially in this age group, and therefore this activity strengthened those muscles in them.

  • Color recognition: The upper part of the cups were painted with different colors. The kids were invited to recognise them and pull out the said colored cups. This helped them in building up the skill of color recognition and differentiation.

  • Language Development: verbs like, “Let’s squeeze the cups”, “Can we push the cup down?”, “ Can we pull the cups out?”, etc. This introduced them with new words for communication.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Brown paper was cut, equivalent to the small table dimensions. Paper cups were glued on it at equal distance and their upper parts were painted with yellow, red and orange in color. During the Work-time, the brown paper was pasted on the table with double sided tape and the toddlers were invited to the space and introduced with the setup.

How did it go? (Finally!)

This activity was a little improvised version to the ‘punching cups’ activities that the children are fond of. Instead of punching this time, they were asked to squeeze and pull out the glued cups from the brown paper. Janya, Krishay, Advaith, Aaradhya, Ratujit, Daksh and Neyansh participated in the activity. It was extremely hard for Advaith to pull the cups even after squeezing the size of the cups, and thus the educator pulled half the cup and he was encouraged to pull the other half. Aaradhya got fascinated by the yellow color sprinkled on the brown paper and she tore that part out. The educator rolled that sheet, made a bracelet from it and Aaradhya made the educator wear it. It was a little easier for Krishay, Ratujit and Neyansh to do the task and thus they seemed to be quite engrossed throughout.
