What are we riding today?

Date: July 20, 2022
Time: Small Group
Facilitators: Simran J, Jasmine and Sifat

PROPS USED

Printed sheets (over which different geometric lines were printed) and vehicle stickers

What was the activity?

The activity was about pulling the stickers from the base sheet and sticking them over the lines (as if these lines are roads/paths) and the vehicles are being driven over these lines.

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Fine motor skills: This task involved mastering the pincer grasp (joining the thumb with the pointer finger to accomplish a task). Peeling off the stickers and dabbing them over the printed sheets helps in building finger strength.

  • Sensory Experience: Sensory play was stimulated since the stickers were in different sizes and colors and toddlers had the agency to choose.

  • Coordination skills: Stickers play helps with hand coordination because it involves peeling the stickers off from one hand and holding the sheet of sticker with the other.

  • Cognitive skills: The kids were encouraged to put the stickers over the geometric lines. Following the instructions can enhance their cognitive skills of listening and identifying different lines.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

In the tray, the educators placed the printed sheets and the vehicle stickers. The educator introduced different vehicles and then the printed sheets, followed by showing them how to and where to stick the stickers on the sheet of paper.

How did it go? (Finally!)

Sticking stickers is not new for these kids and thus, they mostly knew how to pull out the stickers and put it on the sheet. Neyansh, Vanya, Radhya, Atharv Gupta, Jasvi, Janya, Aaradhya, Prisha, Yuvaan, Hriday and Samika participated in the task. When the educators introduced the stickers, they tried bifurcating two-wheelers from four wheelers by making the sound of a scooter and a car during introduction. Samika was new to this and so it was tough for her to pull out the stickers. Atharv Gupta also stopped crying and got interested in sticking the stickers over the sheet. Aaradhya used to paste the stickers over the educator’s face and Atharv made a point to pull them out and paste them back over the sheet. Many kids followed the path and pasted over the lines and some still preferred pasting anywhere on the sheet.
