Setup and Objective
The setup of this activity was quite simple. There were two tables with two educators and they had one tray each with themselves which consisted of paper bowls and pom-pom balls in a tray. For the ‘Math Talk’ or ‘Ganit Charcha’, we had a small whiteboard and marker.
The objective of this activity was for the children to develop number sense and strengthen their fine motor skills.
How it happened
The children came to the table by themselves and waited for the activity to begin. Initially, all the children did some ‘ganit charchaa’ or ‘Math Talk’ where one of the educators drew shapes of different sizes and numbers on the white board with a marker and the children shared what those shapes looked like to them one by one. Then the children took the paper bowls one by one. They were again showed the shapes of different sizes and numbers and they were asked to put as many number of pom-pom balls in their bowls. Children who were able to put the correct number of pom-pom balls in their bowls got high-fives from the educators. The children looked focused and engaged during the activity. Some of them would struggle to match the number of balls with the number of balls on the whiteboard but with some help from the facilitators, they were able to figure out the correct number. Some would come near the whiteboard to count the number of balls. While some would count from far and put that number of balls in their bowls. We did multiple rounds for the children to get more practice.
