Welcome to another episode of this PBL series! The Arthlings have watched their ClayTales take shape over the course of this unit. It’s time for them to add a dash of colour! In this instalment, the Arthlings will paint and decorate their ClayTales to create a finished product!

PLANNING AND SETUP

The activity was divided into the following steps:

1. Painting Action Song: Flashcards depicting various actions related to painting, and the corresponding action words, were printed and stuck around the class.

2. Painting My ClayTale: Brushes, palettes, water glasses, and tempera paint were prepared for use. Aprons and rags were kept ready for messes. Jute cloth was used as a table covering. The children were given their work from the previous class.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Painting Action Song: The Arthlings were greeted by two new tools to use for their project! They were introduced to the paintbrush, and the palette! With the help of a song, Sanmoyee Didi demonstrated how to mix paint in a palette, how to wash a brush, and how to paint using up-and-down, or side-to-side strokes.

The Arthlings are introduced to paintbrushes and palettes!

Painting My ClayTale: The children were each provided with a palette and paintbrush of their own! Divit observed that certain parts of the palette were ‘hollow’. The educators demonstrated how these ‘hollow’ parts, or wells, could be used to store paint colours or mix new ones!
The children observed how different colours could be combined, or how white could be used to lighten colours. Hazzel made a light yellow with yellow and white, and also a pink with yellow, white and red! Meher made a light blue, while Dhriya made her favourite purple!
The new colours inspired the children to add new elements to their ClayTales! Divit added different shades of blue to his ClayTale to make ‘water’. Maryam created a swimming pool which had a machine to clean the water! Ruhani made a baby shark, which was part of a family. Family also featured in Rishit’s ClayTale, where he made a house for his family to live in. Stars featured prominently in Dhriya, Meher, and Shivanshika’s ClayTales; Shivanshika named her star ‘Twinkle twinkle’. Vaanya and Hazzel made colourful gardens!
