Welcome to Day 8 of this PBL journey. In this instalment, the children will learn about emotions through the use of visual storytelling!

PLANNING AND SETUP

The activity was divided into the following steps:

1. Movie and Emotion Slideshow: A movie entitled ‘What Shall We Do With The Angry Monster?’ by Hope Works (available on the CBC Kids YouTube channel), was selected for the children. The projector and screen were set up for viewing.

2. Emotion Bingo: 9 pictures depicting people with different expressions were selected from the internet. They were compiled and incorporated into a 3x3 Bingo sheet for use in class, and copies were made for distribution. Happy, Sad, Angry, Excited, and Scared emoji stickers were printed for use during Bingo.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Movie and Emotion Slideshow: The children assembled in front of the projection screen for Movie Time! Here, they watched a group of small creatures struggle with an ‘Angry Monster’, who kept on flattening their house. The children observed these characters go through several changes of expression, from happy, to scared, then angry, and back to happy again. In the end, they witnessed the ‘Angry Monster’ go through a change of colour, and a change of heart.
When the movie was over, Sanmoyee Didi asked the Arthlings about what they saw. The children recognized facial expressions like ‘scared’ and ‘angry’. They joined the educators in a happy dance, just like the characters in the movie!
The next item to follow was a slideshow. The children viewed pictures of people in different situations, and tried to guess how they were feeling. Some of the pictures were of little children, just like the Arthlings!

Emotion Bingo: Afterwards the children gathered at their tables to play Bingo. They received individual sheets with pictures of people with different expressions! The children identified the expression in each picture, and ‘reacted’ by applying a matching emoji sticker.

OUTCOME AND FUTURE

Film is a powerful medium for conveying emotion. In this PBL instalment, our childrens’ enthusiasm for movies was converted into emotional learning, as they followed the journey of the ‘Angry Monster’ from crisis to catharsis!
In Step 2, Emotion Bingo was used as a tool to individually record and assess the SEL of each student!
