After a two-day-long investigation into the art of photography, the Arthlings have reached Day 7 in their journey of emotions. In this episode, they will learn to interpret and categorize facial expressions with the help of a fun game!
PLANNING AND SETUP
The activity was divided into the following steps:
1. Emotion Stations Game: Pictures were selected from the Arth Hours gallery and the internet, with examples of people displaying the following emotions: happiness, sadness, excitement, anger, and fear. These pictures were printed and prepared for class by attaching adhesive tape on the reverse. Banners were designed to mark the Happy, Sad, Excited, Angry, and Scared Stations. These banners served as a background for attaching pictures during the activity.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Emotion Stations Game: The children were called to their tables to play a fun game. The session began with a discussion about five different feelings: happy, sad, excited, angry, and scared. The children were then presented with a selection of pictures with these emotions. They were invited to study the images, to identify the emotions of the people they could see. If a child identified a photo as ‘Angry’, the photo had to be stuck to the ‘Angry Station’! After understanding the rules of the game, the Arthlings took the photos of their choice and rushed off to stick them in the appropriate stations!
The Arthlings were excited to find that some of the photos had familiar faces. Photos sourced from the Arth Hour gallery turned out to be far more popular than photos taken from around the world, because they featured the children and educators!

OUTCOME AND FUTURE
As our Arthlings grow emotionally, they will learn to understand and adapt to the emotions of people around them. The ability to interpret facial expressions is crucial to this understanding! The Emotion Stations game is an exercise that can assess a child’s ability to read emotions in other people. It is an example of how socio-emotional learning can be realized in a classroom setting through play!
