PROPS USED

Colored chalks and a chalkboard wall

What was the activity?

The activity was simple, the children had to color the figures using different chalk colors.

Why did we plan this activity?

Apart from being so fun and simple in its use, chalks for coloring have several benefits for the toddlers, including,

  • Fine Motor Skills get improved when kids learn about the appropriate grip for holding the chalk in their fingers and then manipulating it in different directions. Eye hand coordination also strengthens.

  • Sensory experience gets enhanced as children get a chance to explore different textures and sizes of the chalk while holding it in their hands.

  • Creativity is expanded since the kids get a free flow of movement on the chalkboard. Also, the chalk can be erased to create a new piece of art on the space board.

  • Outdoor play was encouraged and it is a well known fact that outdoor activities have incomparable benefits for a child’s mind.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

The outlines of a house, a car, a triangle, a flower, a sun were made by the educators on the chalkboard. Two-three bowls of chalks were placed and the kids were expected to color the figures (within the boundaries) by using colorful chalks.

How did it go? (Finally!)

There is always an excitement in kids to go out and engage in sensory time. The facilitators gave the kids the choice to select the color of the chalk they would like to use. Prisha, Janya, Jasvi, Aayansh, and Radhya participated in the activity. They did start scribbling inside but as the time went by, they didn’t restrict the coloring within the boundaries of the figures. Also, they got distracted very easily and shifted to the rhythm wall to make some sounds.
