The Wings of Impressions!

Date: May 11, 2022
Time: Small Group time
Facilitators: Simran K, Simran J and Jasmine

PROPS USED

Tempera paints and a sheet of paper with the body of the butterfly (except the wings).

What was the activity?

The activity was all about putting the impressions of the palms as the wings of the butterfly using the tempera paints.

Why did we plan this activity?

Apart from all the creative vibes this artistic activity provided, it induced a lot of learning for the kids, including,

  • Language and speech development can be observed in how they recognise and learn about names of different colors along with the different sizes, shapes and direction of the fingers and hands on the sheet.

  • Sensory Experience was generated when the kids felt the cool, soft and moist texture of the paint and experimented with three different colors and patterns.

  • Fine motor skills develop since the muscles of the hands are being creatively put to use.

  • Improving concentration is another benefit since all the focus gets directed towards the sheet of paper and how to move the hands over it.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

This activity involved getting the body of the butterfly printed on sheets of paper before the kids arrived along with squeezing three different paint colors on quarter plates. During the small group time, the sheets and paints were placed on the table and they were invited to complete the butterfly with their own hand impressions and myriad colors.

How did it go? (Finally!)

The kids didn’t restrict their painting on the wings section of the butterfly, but rather they moved their palms, sometimes slowly and other times with utmost eagerness, all over the sheets. It was difficult for this age group to place their palms horizontally, in the direction of the wings, however, they were able to place their palms vertically on the sheet. Zavi waved her  hands all over the page with paints. Radhya, Zavi and Jasvi preferred using the red paint for their impressions while Dhanika and Daksh chose pink at first and kaira played a little with yellow. The sensory experience of playing with paints was quite satisfactory owing to the fact that many kids did the activity multiple times before leaving for hand wash.
