Colors bubbling Up!

Date: May 10, 2022
Time: Small Group time
Facilitators: Simran K, Shifat, Simran J and Jasmine

PROPS USED

Rangoli colors (Powdered form), baking soda, small bowls and vinegar (in small squeezy-bottles) and three large trays were the main ingredients used in this mini explosive experiment.

What was the activity?

This is an experiment wherein baking soda is mixed with clear vinegar to produce a bubbling effect. This reaction converts baking soda into water and carbon dioxide. The CO2 gives the bubbling effect and the water keeps the bubbles going. By adding colored powder, the foam gets the specific color when bubbling up.

Why did we plan this activity?

Apart from the excitement that comes up when they see the colorful bubbling effect, this activity helps in learning a lot of things, including,

Fine motor skills are enhanced when they are engaged with squeezing the vinegar bottles to pour it inside the bowl containing baking soda and colors. Also, eye-hand coordination gets better when the arthlings know that they have to pour inside the bowl only to get the bubbling effect.

Building enthusiasm for science in toddlers is a clear goal that is achieved through this experiment. It is super easy to perform and kids seem to enjoy the explosive reaction.

Attention, focus and concentration are enhanced since they have to follow the instructions of the facilitators to perform the experiment.

Cognitive abilities are worked up as well since they get a chance to participate in the science experiment, recognize the colors in the bowls and learn new words to communicate with their peers.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

The 3 trays were set up, each including around six-seven bowls of rangoli powder and baking soda. The educators called out each earthling to participate in the experiment. Firstly, they opened the lids of the vinegar bottles and then squeezed the container into each bowl. The kids watched the bubbling effect with utmost excitement.

How did it go? (Finally!)

The experiment was quite interesting and thus it drew the attention of almost every kid in the classroom. Neyansh took his time to open the lid of the vinegar bottle. It was a learning moment for Ratujit, Janya, Jasvi, Daksh when they were taught to first squeeze the bottle to get the vinegar pouring out. Shifat put the colors directly onto the tray and Kaira, Dhanika and Zavi got a chance to play with the colors and the bubbles with their fingers and palms, leading to a sensory experience for them. The whole experiment was repeated again and again since everybody took interest in the activity.
